Before diving into selecting your surfboard, it's essential to understand your current surfing proficiency. Are you a beginner, intermediate, or advanced surfer? Your skill level will determine the type of board that suits your experience and surfing style best.
Beginner: If you've caught the surfing bug and are eager to hit the waves on your next vacation or whenever the weather permits, you're likely a beginner. Perhaps you've just taken your first surf lessons (maybe even with one of our boards) or have started surfing independently a few times a year. You may still be getting the hang of it, but you're eager to progress with your own board.
Intermediate: You're a frequent surfer who has made good progress with a foam board. You're steady on your feet and can paddle out to the lineup confidently. Venturing offshore is no problem, and you're comfortable executing take-offs and starting to master some maneuvers.
Expert: Surfing is a regular part of your life, and you're adept at navigating the lineup even in challenging conditions. You're proficient in turns and maneuvers and feel at ease on a smaller board or a longboard.
The Weekender series is Ocean Storm's newest addition to the softboard range and is proving to be one of the most popular.
Your weight and height play crucial roles in selecting the right surfboard for you. Generally, longer and wider boards are suitable for heavier surfers, while shorter boards are better for lighter surfers. Make sure to choose a board that allows you to float easily and move comfortably on the water.
The shape of your surfboard is crucial in defining its behavior on the waves. Longer and wider boards are perfect for beginners as they provide greater stability and buoyancy. Conversely, shorter and narrower boards are more maneuverable and typically favored by experienced surfers seeking higher performance.
Surfboards are crafted from various materials, including foam and resin. Foam boards are ideal for beginners due to their durability and reduced risk of injury in case of a fall. Resin boards offer enhanced performance and are preferred by experienced surfers seeking greater responsiveness on the waves.
Core and layers:
Our Oceans Storm range offers you a choice of different construction concepts. Among our foam boards, we offer two different constructions. With a board like The Weekender, you get a Softboard that is 100% foam (EPS Foam) and therefore offers great floatability, is very robust and light. Our Back to School, Start-Up and King-Pin models as well as all of our performance Softboards (Sanchez, Lil Ninja, Vampire Twin, and Rock Star) are not just foam boards but are based on a technology that combines the advantages of foam boards with those of hard boards. They have layers of fibre glass to enhance performance and agility, make the boards more maneuverable and gives you the feel of real Surfboard and therefore the opportunity to advance with your surf level. While the Start Up only has one layer of fibre glass, the Back to School has a top layer and an addition fiberglass spine at the bottom. The King Pin comes with a double layer of fibre glass at the top and an additional fiberglass spine at the bottom. Our PU hard boards (the Top Dog) are resin based boards that focus on fun hybrid and minimal shapes with extra volume and reinforced fiberglass. With the standard fiberglass construction, it serves as a perfect transitional board, ensuring consistent quality throughout.
Stringers and reinforcements:
Our boards come in different strengths which are more or less defined by the stringers and the reinforcements. Our lightest board is the Start-up with one wooden stringer. It is perfect for lighter surfers as well as kids. The heavier/taller the surfer the stronger the board you want to choose. The Back to School is a board with two stringers that fits almost all surfers. It has additional EVA reinforcements at the tail, which makes it a bit stronger at that tail. The King Pin is our heavy duty board with three stringers and EVA bumpers all around the board so it is very sturdy. The Weekender comes with two stringers which gives it the perfect amount of stability/strength.
Top deck and bottom:
All of our boards are being wrapped in with a protective IXPE foam on the top deck and a HDPE slick bottom. The fin plugs in the slick bottom and 100% sealed and waterproof.
Kids have a unique approach to learning surfing compared to adults. They often have fewer hesitations, adapt more quickly to situations, and learn and progress much faster than we do. We've taken all of this to heart and are thrilled to offer 'grom' boards for your little ones that are 100% tailored to their size, weight, and abilities.
